Exhibition from April 22 to May 09, 2021
Returning to Nantes after a year spent in Madrid as a member of the Académie de France at Casa Vélasquez, Justin Weiler presents for the first time the seven pieces in the Dédale series, as well as a fragment of the Madrid triptych associated with the new Screen series.
Halos, grids and stripes, transparencies and nuances, plays of shadows and reflections, Justin Weiler's compositions create immersive effects and depth with light, distancing the viewer from the re-kept object. From Indian ink on glass to low-relief silkscreened volumes, it's always a question of traces and repeated gestures, of successive layers, impressions or imprints, of manipulating textures and thicknesses.
A way of wandering between codes and aesthetic repertoires, the artist's work resides in an analogy between the gesture that shapes, the hangings that arrange and the idea of the painter and sculptor. Tension between the mechanical and the processual, the arbitrary and the handmade, the palette combines the organic and the empirical, the natural and the minimal, manufacturing devices and the reworking of protocols. In citing the names of Gasiorowski, Larry Bell and Barnett Newman, Justin Weiler points to his constant desire to emancipate himself from a certain way of making painting, as well as to play with its programmatic character.
Excerpt from Light is the new black by Frédéric Emprou.
Operire #7 promises to be the introduction to an audacious project that will unfold at the gallery in a second phase next year.
